In Montessori pedagogy, the blindfold is not a material in itself, but an essential auxiliary tool used to isolate and refine the senses, especially the tactile, thermal and auditory.
Using the blindfold helps children to "see with their hands", eliminating visual stimuli that can distract from the main sensory experience.
Where is the blindfold used?
Stereognosis (Stereognostic Sense): This is the most common use. The child is blindfolded and must recognize objects only by touch (e.g. in the "Mystery Bag", where they must identify geometric shapes or everyday objects).
Thermal tablets and bottles: As previously discussed, in order to feel the fine differences in temperature between metal, wood or stone, the child wears the mask to focus exclusively on what the skin feels.
Tactile Boards (Rough and Smooth): To sense the difference between different grits of sandpaper or the fineness of silk.
Sound Boxes: Sometimes used to match pairs of cylinders that make the same sound, without being influenced by the external appearance of the boxes.
Smell and Taste: Used with scent bottles or tasting activities, to prevent recognition of foods or plants by appearance.
Why is it important?
Deep Concentration: Helps the child enter a state of "flow", as the brain no longer processes images and can focus on fine tactile details.
Self-confidence: The child learns to trust their own senses and orient themselves in space using cues other than visual ones.
Brain Refinement: Stimulates the creation of new neural connections related to spatial and tactile perception.
Important note: In Montessori, the use of a mask is always optional. If a child feels uncomfortable or scared with their eyes covered, they are encouraged to simply close their eyes ("sleepy eyes") or work without the mask until they feel ready.
