3D Grammar Symbols (or Grammar Solids) represent the transition from sensory exploration to language study in Montessori pedagogy. These are geometric wooden bodies, specifically colored, used to introduce parts of speech to children aged 5-7.
Unlike flat (2D) symbols used for paper analysis, 3D symbols offer a tactile experience that helps to memorize the function of each word.
The most important 3D symbols:
Black Pyramid (Noun): Represents objects and beings. It is a pyramid because it is stable, solid and “old as the mountain” (the first words of humanity were the names of things).
Red Sphere (Verb): Represents action and movement. It is a sphere (like a ball) because it can roll and suggests the solar energy that gives life to the phrase.
Small Blue Pyramid (Adjective): Similar to the noun, but smaller. It sits next to the “big pyramid” to describe it (color, size, shape).
Small Orange Pyramid (Article): The smallest pyramid, used to introduce the noun.
Purple Pyramid (Pronoun): A tall, thin pyramid that “stands in” for the noun when it is missing.
Golden Crescent (Interjection): Represents sudden emotion or sound.
Why are solids used instead of simple drawings?
Concept Isolation: The child can hold the “verb” in their hand and feel that it is different from the “noun.”
Visualizing Structure: Children physically place these objects on top of the words written on the labels, visually building the “architecture” of a sentence.
Preparation for Abstraction: After playing with solids, the transition to symbols drawn on paper becomes much easier and more natural.
