The Roman Arch is one of the most popular Montessori materials in the Sensory and Cultural area, being a miniature model of a real architectural structure.
It consists of a set of wooden blocks cut at specific angles, which are assembled on a special support to form a self-supporting arch.
1. How does it work?
The secret of the Roman Arch lies in the force of compression.
The child places the pieces on a formwork (wooden support) that temporarily supports them.
The central piece, called the keystone, is the last to be assembled.
Once the keystone is in place, the inner support can be removed, and the arch will remain standing only by the force of gravity and friction between the blocks, without any glue.
2. What does the child learn?
Physics and engineering concepts: Understand how weight is distributed and how resistance structures work.
Coordination and precision: Requires very fine hand movement to avoid breaking the structure before completion.
Concentration and patience: This is an activity that requires great attention to detail and the order of the pieces.
History and architecture: Introduces the child to the world of Ancient Rome and their engineering genius (aqueducts, amphitheaters).
3. Error control
The material has a built-in error control: if the pieces are not placed in the correct order or if the angles do not align perfectly, the arch will collapse when the support is withdrawn.
It is a fascinating exercise that gives the child the huge satisfaction of seeing how the "magic" of physics holds the stones together.
This product is a teaching material, not a toy. Not recommended for children under 3 years of age without supervised by an adult.
