The Montessori Object Permanence Box with Tray is a classic teaching aid designed to help babies and young children develop the concept of object permanence.
What is object permanence?
Object permanence is the understanding that objects continue to exist even when they are not visible. For a very young baby, if an object disappears from his or her field of vision, it disappears from existence completely. This box helps the child understand, through repetition and tactile experience, that the object reappears.
How does it work?
The material usually consists of a wooden box with a hole in the top and an attached tray or opening in the bottom/side. The activity is simple:
The child takes a ball and inserts it through the hole in the top.
The ball disappears for a moment.
Immediately, the ball reappears, rolling on the tray, in front of the child.
Educational Benefits and Goals
This simple activity offers numerous developmental benefits:
Cognitive Development: Helps to understand the principle of cause and effect (if I put the ball in, it will come out again) and ultimately object permanence.
Motor Skills: Refines hand-eye coordination (hitting the hole) and manual dexterity (catching and releasing the ball).
Concentration: The repetitive nature of the task keeps the child focused and engaged.
Confidence: The child gains confidence in their ability to complete a task independently.
When to Introduce?
The permanence box is usually introduced to infants once they can sit up unaided, around 6-12 months of age.
This product is a teaching material, not a toy. Not recommended for children under 3 years of age without supervised by an adult.
Made in Romania.
