Orff musical instruments are designed to be intuitive, allowing children to create music through direct exploration, without requiring advanced performance technique. In the Orff-Schulwerk pedagogy, wooden instruments occupy a central place due to their warm and natural sound.
Here are the main categories of Orff instruments made mainly of wood:
Rhythmic Percussion Instruments
Claves (Rhythmic Sticks): Two cylindrical sticks made of hardwood that, when struck together, produce a dry, piercing sound.
Woodblock: A hollow piece of wood that makes a "hollow" sound when struck with a mallet.
Wooden Guiro: A notched instrument that is struck with a stick, imitating the sound of a frog or a crackling sound.
Wooden Maracas: The natural version of the famous shaker instruments, offering a softer sound than plastic ones.
Why wood?
In early music education, wood is preferred because it offers a rich sensory experience (texture, smell, weight) and a natural resonance that does not tire the child's hearing, unlike metal or cheap plastic instruments.
This product is a teaching material, not a toy. Not recommended for children under 3 years of age without supervised by an adult.
